Tinman Reviews: Unboxing Princess Malya

We finally get our hands on one of the gorgeous mech riding ladies from Soda Pop Miniatures, and I chose Princess Malya for her general Anime Awesomeness.  This is the start of my Relic Knights collection.  I hope to collect, build, and paint these models.  If someone else in my area jumps in it I'll get to play as well and you'll see a battle report.

Steam Powered Combat: Blaize vs. Karchev 15pts IN REAL TIME

In this game I'm taking Constance Blaize the new Cygnar/Mercenary Warcaster from Warmachine: Wrath out for a spin. We're playing 15pts of Mangled Metal with the option of one solo. The game turns are recorded in real time, and this is made possible by the fact that I'm playing at a fiend's house and therefore I'm not having to deal with the Chaos of a LGS.

This was from September 25th of 2011, and now redone in 720p HD.

The Tinman Talks: Central Coast Championships Afterthoughts

The previous roadtrip video didn't cover all the awesome of the tournament, so I thought I'd chat about it in first installment of "The Tinman Talks."

My First Malifaux Tournament

So, I played in my first Malifaux tournament today.  And, I won.  Funny that!  Four of us showed up to play, so we did a three-round round-robin.  Basically, we all played each other and then we compared tournament records at the end.

ROUND ONE: vs. Arcanists - The shared strategy was Claim Jump, and I spent the game moving my Death Marshals within three inches of the 30mm objective.  My opponent was keeping most of his models in cover from where he would fire shots with Gunsmiths and slang spells with Kaeris.  During the second round I charged Kaeris with The Judge and discovered that wasn't the wisest course of action.  But, somehow he survived to see the end of the game.  Just about everything did, because before we knew it the round was over.  I had all but one of my models on the claim.  My opponent didn't have anything near the objective, so I ended up winning the game.  I got the strategy and an additional point for Hold Out which I didn't announce.

ROUND TWO: vs. Neverborn -  I played against The Dreamer, and the scenario required us to take and hold table corners.  We both played aggressively, but I was able to assassinate  both The Dreamer and Lord Chompy Bits and take a lot of options away from my opponent.  When the dust settled neither of us were able to get off our schemes, but I did manage to take one point from the strategy and earn a victory.

ROUND THREE: vs. Arcanists - The final scenario was Treasure Hunt and I found myself up against Collette and her Showgirls.  And, I actually had to cry broken during this game.  When Collete somehow managed to get a model to the objective during the first turn, swap places with it and then swap places with Cassandra, and then Cassandra manages to take off with the treasure.  I thought the game was over when the objective was taken back to Collette's deployment zone, but I had it in my head that completing the victory conditions of the scenario would end the game.  It was explained to me that this was not the case, so I ended up chasing the guy down and managing to assassinate Collette.  At the end of the game my opponent got +4 points for the strategy, and I got +4 points for getting off both of my announced schemes.  So we legitimately tied.

Between the second and third round I swift-walked across the parking lot to grab a couple corn dogs.  While I was doing this my fully painted models were judged for the painting competition, and I ended up winning.   Top Prize was a three day pass to SoCal Smackdown, and I got 10 dollars in credit to Wyrd Miniatures online store.

All in all I'd say it was a good day of Malifaux.

Lady Justice Crew Complete

And, here is the final group shot of my completed Death Marshals box after I sprayed some clear coat on them for protection from minor scraps and bumps. I can't wait to put them down on the table top and get some games in.

Friday, April 27, 2012

So, yesterday I got to looking at my Woldwatcher and that lead to me mixing up a think glaze based on Citadel Cathan Brown:

And then I mixed up another glaze based in VMC Basalt Grey:

And at that point I remembered how easy it was to paint Wolds. So, I painted the ropes and started shading:

After I soaked the model in Devlen Mud and Badab Black I made use of the new Citadel Drybrush paints. So far I like them. But, time will tell soon enough:

At this point all I had to do was base him and paint his arcs:

Now, he's ready for the table top.

Lady Justice almost done

So, "Project Half-done" is underway. And first on the agenda is my Death Marshall box from Malifaux:

I decided to work on them today, and finish what I started two years ago:

They are now two steps away from being "fully painted" and all I'll have left from the box is The Judge who I have to repair before I can finish. He actually broke off from his base a couple months ago.

Project Wrapped Up and Central Coast Steamroller

So, I was able to completely finish and paint the models I had been working on the past couple of weeks.  I spayed them with High Gloss varnish to protect them, and Testor's Dullcote to bust down the shine.  So, the following models made their FULLY PAINTED tabletop debut at  the Central Coast Championship Steamroller in Lompoc, Ca.:

My original plan was to liveblog my tournament results at the conclusion of each round, but unfortunately I was having power-drain issues with my phone.  This meant that I had to be really conservative with it's use considering the fact that I was 153 miles from home.  On the plus side I did document a lot of the tournament, so a pretty awesome video is on the way when I get around to editing it.

As for the tournament itself, I did a hell of a lot better than what I expected when I going into it.  I went 3-2 in the tournament overall, I won best painted, and some how manage to earn "most victory points."  What's cool about winning best painted at this event is that the models were being judged by a professional painter.

Set For Saturday

So it looks like I'm set for this Saturday! Everything I was hoping to put down on the table and use is 99% done.

The arcs are marked and ready to be colored in:

And all the figures have received some of my homemade textured-paint:

The Ragman snuck into this, because he needs to get finished up as well. Additionally, I'll say that Bob was so fun to paint that I can't wait to finish the rest of my Tharn.

As for the Steamroller I'll be live-blogging my progress, so be sure to check in on Saturday to see how I'm doing.

Dr. Zoidberg

A friend of mine recently started a legion army, and got his hands on Proteus. So, we all jokingly referred to the model as Dr. Zoidberg. I even went as far as to do this:

Well, these jokes inspired him to take that idea and run with it like a four year-old with a pair of scissors. And, he went and did this:

He actually went and painted his Proteus up as Dr. Zoidberg. Right down to the flip flops. He even wants to find other Privateer Press minis to represent Futurama characters. Any ideas?

This is why I love this hobby. Because, we can have that kind of fun. I can't wait to see what he does for the next Iron Painter.

Painting Goal just about met for Upcoming Tournament

So, I just about finished Nualla the Huntress (who is cloaked in shadow for this photo) and I basecoated "Bob" the Whitemane. So, these are two models I'll be able to roll with on Saturday.

Bob actually has a story behind him. He once went through an entire unit of Dawnguard Invictors +UA and put a few points of damage on Dawnlord Vyross during the same activation. One of those moments I wish was captured by the SteamPoweredTV camera.

Circle Orboros Update

So, I finished the Druid Wilder, and from there I moved on to these three solos and a UA. I'm hoping to finish The Huntress by Friday. Wednesday should be a day where I can get some serious painting done.

Druid Wilder WIP

I got in a couple hours of painting today, and this is what I did with a model I started years ago - but, never finished. Hopefully I'll get her finished soon.

Three Merc Solo's Basecoated During "Paint/Assembly Night."

So, I set one goal for myself during tonight's "Paint/Assembly Night," and that was to basecoat three of my Mercenary solos.  The original plan was to paint Drake MacBain, but I have to save him for another day.

Already primmed white the first thing I did was blackline the models with some wash I mixed up and keep in an spare pot for just this very purpose.  After this I tried out the new Citadel "Praxeti White" to dry-brush white back onto the models.  This "dry-brushing paint" is pretty cool.  I'd say more about it, but I want to use it more before I give my full opinion on it.  And, that could get video treatment.

After I snapped this photo, I decided to have a little fun and add this word bubble using the "fun bubble" app for my iphone.  I then uploaded this picture to Facebook, and tagged a friend in it.  Being a Legion player I know he doesn't want to see her on the other end o the table.

The first thing I did after bringing out the detail was paint the skin tones.  It's something I always do first when painting people. Lanyssa got P3 Frostbite as her skintone since she is a Nyss (Ice Elf).

The base-coating was coming along, and I was in the zone.  But, then I hit a wall, and at about this point I decided it was time to take a break and stepped away from the table.

After my break from the table I got right back into the zone and didn't get back up until I completed my goal for the night, and here they are:

Stoked that I made it to this point I started to wonder about when I'd have another opportunity to paint.  And, I speculated that maybe my figures could be saying the same thing:

Hopefully I can get back to these in a timely manner, or at least finish up some of the other half-done projects I have going on around here.

MALIFAUX BATTLE REPORT: Death Mashals vs. Liliths's Brood

For the first time SteamPoweredTV is delving into the world of Malifaux. This was a learning game for me, and a lot of fun as you will see. In the game my Guild forces are taking on the Neverborn.

Iron Painter 8: Final Entries.

And, here are all the entries from last night's IRON PAINTER competition.  I shot some video from the event, but I don't know how well it's going to turn out.  In the mean time enjoy these semi-pro quality photos.

Iron Painter 8: finished

And, Iron Painter 8 is now done as of an hour-and-a-half ago. And here we have my finished Pureblood Warpwolf. He turned out better than I had hoped. I also got video of the event for a possible installment of SteamPoweredTV. I don't know how well that video will turn out, but I can say that something is going to come of this.

Iron Painter 8: 4th check-in

I managed to get myself in "the zone." And now I'm waiting for the shade pass to dry. I did the armor as well as the leather bracers and "bib." When the wash dries I'll touch the warpwolf up with some highlights and get the eyes done.

Iron Painter 8: third check-in

Okay, I know this isn't a good photograph, buy you can clearly see that major basecoating operations are well underway. I'm basing his flesh with Trollblood Highlight and the armor with Blighted Gold. More check-ins to come.

Iron Painter 8: second check in

First thing I did was coat the entire model with Citadel's Badab Black wash, and when it dries I'm going to dry-brush the figure with Skull White. And from that point it's time to get down to business.

Iron Painter 8: first check

So, Iron Painter has just begun, and this is what I'm painting. And for this I am live blogging my progress. Right now he's primed and begging for paint with those puppy-dog eyes.

Cleaning out the Wargaming Closet

You know how it is: you get excited for that one new model that is coming out for your army, you pre-order it from your FLGS, you buy it the day it comes out, and then you stuff it a drawer and not do anything with it for like a year-and-a-half.  Well, I got more models like that then I'd like to admit. So lately I've been putting them together.  Mostly Warmachine and Hordes models as well as a box of Malifaux figures.  As models get painted and assembled I'll try to remember to post updates here.
